Average Wine Prices

How average prices are calculated within Wine-Searcher's database of 5,095,687 wine-pricing offers.

What entries are included in the calculations?

We exclude some of the entries in the database when calculating an average.

1. The wine name must match a Wine-Searcher known wine.
2. Selling unit must be in a size that can be converted to a bottle equivalent.
3. Auction lists are excluded.
4. A handful of other consistently high priced lists are excluded.

Tax Handling

Average prices (and price ranges) are sales tax exclusive. Our calculations remove sales tax from any tax-inclusive price lists. The tax status of a merchant's price list is shown on our detail pages about that merchant (along with their address and our rating, etc.).

How are erroneous prices handled?

In order to provide the most reasonable estimate, we remove the top and bottom 10% when ordered by price. This means that the average price is not skewed by unusual problems (such as our software confusing bottles with cases).

What are price ranges?

Occasionally we show a price range rather than the average price. The price range ignores the very highest and very lowest prices as per the erroneous prices section above.

Why are average prices different from what I see in my search results?

There are three reasons why you may see a variation:

1. Average prices exclude sales taxes; merchant detail results often include taxes.
2. Our software removes the very highest and very lowest prices when calculating averages.
3. If you are using the free version of Wine-Searcher you are viewing a partial set of results.

Are average prices calculated across all countries or the country I have selected?

Average prices and price ranges are calculated for each wine, for each vintage and for each country. So if you have selected the United States, we will show you the average price for the wine from merchants located only in the United States.

How do you handle currency and exchange rates?

All prices displayed on Wine-Searcher are converted to the selected currency using Interbank exchange rates. These rates are updated every day.
