How average prices and price ranges are calculated within the Professional Version of the Wine-Searcher database of 4,018,093 wine offers.

What are average prices?

To find wines at the best price our software calculates the average price where it is able. In some circumstances this is not possible and no average price shows. Please contact us about errors or omissions in our average prices.

What wines are included in the calculations?

The following conditions must be met for a wine to be considered in our average price / price range calculations:

• Must be 'matched' against Wine-Searcher's 'known wines'.
• Must be in a unit size that can be converted to a bottle equivalent. For instance, the price for a case of 12 bottles is divided by 12.
• Must not be an auction item.

How are erroneous prices handled?

In order to provide the most reasonable estimate of average prices and price ranges, whenever more than a few wines exist for a match we remove the top and bottom 10% when ordered by price. This means that the average price is not skewed by a mistake on a merchants wine list or where a small number of merchants have a price that is unusually higher or lower than the majority of merchants.

What are price ranges?

Where we think it is more useful we show a price range rather than the average price, for instance, a wine search across multiple vintages. The price range ignores the very highest and very lowest prices as per the erroneous prices section above.

Why are average prices and price ranges different from what I see in my search results?

There are a couple reasons why you may see a variation in the prices on the wine search results compared to the stated average price or price range:

1. Our software removes the very highest and very lowest prices as per the erroneous prices section above.
2. If you are using the free version of Wine-Searcher you are only viewing a partial result set.

Are average prices calculated across all countries or the country I have selected?

Average prices and price ranges are calculated for each wine, for each vintage and for each country. So if you have selected United States, then we will show you the average price for the wine from merchants located only in the United States.

How do you handle currency and exchange rates?

When the average prices are displayed on Wine-Searcher they are converted to the selected currency using the most recent exchange rates (Wine-Searcher updates exchange rates daily).
