The number of celebrity-branded wines has grown steadily in the past few decades, from just a few brands in the 1970s to several hundred today (the celebrity wine industry is now worth more than $50 million in the US alone). Some are made for marketing reasons, some just for fun; (AC-DC's Cliff Williams admits to enjoying the 'novelty' of the AC-DC wine range.
Roughly speaking, the 'celebrity winemakers' fall into two categories: those who establish their own winery and those who contract an established winery to produce a wine to their specifications. The most obvious and long-established member of this first category is Hollywood director and producer Francis Ford Coppola, more recently joined by Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie ('Brangelina') who purchased Provence's Chateau de Miraval in 2008.
