Aragonez or Tinta Arogoneza, is the name used in Portugal for Spain's top red grape Tempranillo. It is grown under this name predominantly in Portugal's southern Alentejo wine region, where it produces deep-colored, concentrated red wines. These are usually aged in oak to bring added richness and subtle sweeter notes to the variety's characteristic red fruit aromas. As with any wine grape, if over cropped Aragonez produces bland wine better used as a component in red blends. Within Alentejo the site and water availability will influence the style; Aragonez prefers a cooler climate and being overly hot and dry will not suit it. In the Douro valley Aragonez is known as Tinto Roriz. It is used there both for table wines and in Port production. There are a number of regional names for the same grape within Spain and Portugal, listed on this page (below), and as Tempranillo it is grown around the world, preferring the cooler regions. The USA, countries in South America, Australia and New Zealand have plantings of it, and the grape seems to thrive in areas with elevated diurnal temperature variation, where cool nights and warm days are the norm.
