Muscat of Alexandria

Muscat of Alexandria is a grape which is almost as old as the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains but produces wines which are inferior to it. It is thought to have originated in Egypt and was spread through the Mediterranean by the Romans. Spain has the largest plantings of the vine now. It is also important in the New World - most especially South Africa and Chile. It is also known as Muscat Romain (Roussillon), Roman Muscat and Moscatel Romano (Spain).
