L’Acadie Blanc is an early-ripening hybrid grape variety found in selected north-eastern regions of North America. It’s greatest concentrations are found in Quebec and Nova Scotia, where it is the most widely planted grape vine in the province. L’Acadie Blanc owes its parentage to the Vineland research station in Ontario where it was first crossed in 1953. Originally called V-53621, L’Acadie Blanc very nearly disappeared into the viticultural void. The hybrid is a crossing of Seyve-Villard 14-287 and Seibel 13053, better known as Cascade, neither parent possessing particularly prestigious heritage. In the 1950s V-53621 was being developed for use in Ontario, though initial trials were not positive in this environment. The project was scrapped, but not before ten vines were sent to Nova Scotia for trial in a cooler, more maritime, climate. As luck would have it, the unwanted grape thrived in its new home. L’Acadie Blanc was first released as a wine at Grand Pre Winery, Nova Scotia in the 1970s. At the time Acadian culture was undergoing a renaissance in Nova Scotia and V-53621 was renamed L’Acadie Blanc in honor of the region’s colonial heritage. Over the next 30 years the Nova Scotian wine scene began to grow and plantings of L’Acadie Blanc increased accordingly. It is now widely regarded as the best expression of Nova Scotia wine, though locking down the defining varietal signature has not been easy. In the early days L’Acadie Blanc was frequently likened to Chardonnay for its body and texture but more recent fashions have seen it compared to Sauvignon Blanc because of its grassy, often citric aroma profile. The best examples tend to come from cooler vintages and are pale yellow in color with medium acidity.
