Robert Parker Ratings and Wine PricesRobert Parker is the most influential wine critic in the world. His bi-monthly newsletter, The Wine Advocate, was first published in 1978 and is believed to have a profound effect both on prices and market demand for fine wines around the world. The Wine Advocate journal and the related website use Robert Parker ratings and his version of the 100-point scale which, like Wine Spectator, has 50 as the lowest possible score. A detailed explanation of the scoring method used can be found on our Wine Scores page. Using Wine-Searcher's listings as at end of June 2005, we have compared the minimum, maximum and average price per case (in USD) for wines rated 80 to 100 by Robert Parker. The results are in Table 1 below:
Table 1: Minimum, Maximum and Average Price per Case in USD by Robert Parker Rating
Although clearly having a significant influence on the wines which are rated 96 and above, the data shows that the impact on wines rated with lower points appears to be minimal.
