Australia is an extremely important wine-producing country, both in terms of quality and the sheer scale of its wine economy. It ranks sixth in terms of contribution to the volume of world wine production and as of September 2009, the country was the fourth biggest exporter of wine with the annual figures measured at a staggering 758 million liters, valued at 2.4 billion Australian dollars (ref: Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation).
The country has long been at the forefront of the 'New World' wine renaissance with a highly dedicated and professional research and development based industry. The domestic as well as the world wine industry has immensely benefited from the technological advancements in winegrowing thanks to the pioneering efforts of organizations like the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI). The country's contribution in revolutionizing vineyard management practices is also second to none.
Australia has developed a robust appellation system for its wine industry which complements its high production standards and the reputation of its wines. You can find more about the country's wine and labeling laws in our Australian wine label page.
The vast landscape of Australia with an even broader range of climate and geography makes it one of the most versatile winegrowing countries of the world. Overall, the climate is impacted by its southern latitude but regional features like altitude and proximity to water bodies play a huge role in shaping up its wine landscape. With such variable conditions it is not surprising that there is hardly any style of wine that is not produced across its seven states, most prominent of these wine regions lying between 32 and 42 latitudes but the vast majority of the total production is concentrated in the southeast of the country. Be it the cult wines based on its very own Shiraz, southern Rhône style blends, a plethora of classic fruit-forward aromatics led by Eden and Clare Valley Rieslings, highly acclaimed Chardonnays with or without barrel influence, unpretentious but delicious Hunter Valley Semillons, heavy and complex fortified and dessert wines, world class sparkling wines - Australia's wine portfolio is almost as complete as one can imagine.
The country has also played a major role in the globalization of wine. Many of its brands have strong international presence, so do many of its winery and vineyard innovations as well as qualified and well-trained professionals who have spread their expertise to many corners of the wine world.
Overall, Australia has a well established and highly regarded wine industry that has set new bechmarks in quality wine production. With continued technological advancements and individual endeavors these standards can only achieve greater heights.
