Beaujolais Villages is located in the central/northwest part of the greater Beaujolais region on the foothills of the Massif Central. This area covers some 38 communes and accounts for about a quarter of the total annual Beaujolais production and is the second most important appellation in terms of both quantity and quality.
A hilly terrain and schist/granite, sandy soils lend the potential for better quality wines than the larger Beaujolais region in general. This provides a range of wines from the early drinking, fruit driven style produced as Beaujolais Villages Nouveau through to some more serious and complex wines that are capable of being cellared.
If a Beaujolais Villages is produced from fruit sourced solely from within one of the designated communes, the wine is then able to be named of that commune.
