Franschhoek, Dutch for 'French Corner', is a ward situated in the south-east of the famous wine region of Paarl. The name signifies that this wineland was founded by the French Huguenot settlers in the 17th century who brought their winemaking traditions that are still reflected in the valley's wines. Unlike many other South African bulk-wine producing regions, Franschhoek Valley is known for boutique and estate producers.
The grape-growing conditions of the Franschhoek Valley are hugely affected by the sheltered climate thanks to the mountain ranges that encircle the region. These help in trapping the cool winds from the south lengthening the growing season which help in developing concentrated aromas in the grapes.
The high-altitude vineyards produce extremely high quality white wines from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. Prominent red varieties include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Premium quality sparkling wines using the cap-classique method are also produced in the region.
