Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, between 35 and 45 degree parallels, boasts of the most easterly vineyards in the world which are not only characterized by a coastal influence but also a sheltered macro-climate and plentiful sunshine during the growing season making it one of the most reliable for growing grapes. The region produces a wide range of wine styles, ranging from sparkling, full bodied as well as aromatic whites and vibrant, fruity reds.
The grape variety that brings out the best Gisborne has to offer is Chardonnay, which thrives in this climate making some of the most delicious wines in the country from this grape variety, a reason why it is also known as the 'Chardonnay capital of New Zealand'. Other notable grape varieties include Gewürztraminer and reds like Merlot and Malbec.
