The Alsace Grand Cru appellation, created in 1983, is a wine from a single named vineyard and vintage and one of four permitted varieties (Riesling, Muscat, Gewurtztraminer or Pinot Gris). The appellation is the subject of much controversy. Out of 94 sites originally considered, more than 50 have so far been chosen, although boundaries are still in dispute. Indeed, some of the top negociants have Grand Cru vineyards but prefer to use the name by which they have historically sold the wine.
