Madagascar produces 2.3 million gallons of wine a year from about 2,000 Ha in the central Hauts Plateaux area. Vineyards are cultivated at altitudes of between 750 and 1350 meters. About 700 vine-growers, with an average of 2 Ha of vineyard each, are centered on Fianarantsoa and Ambalavo.
