Marin County is a coastal region just north of San Francisco. It is influenced by the maritime climate of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which make up three of the regions borders. The fourth border is inland and to the northeast where half of the Marin County AVA is officially in the North Coast AVA.
Boutique wineries are the most prevalent here, with most of the vines grown in the west of Marin. The challenging cool climate has seen some success with the unpredictable Pinot Noir grape. A long cool growing season means grapes hang on the vine for longer resulting in high quality yields. Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Merlot are some of the other cool climate varieties that do well here.
