Marin County Wine

Marin County is a coastal region of California to north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. It is influenced by the maritime climate of the Pacific Ocean, San Pablo Bay and San Francisco Bay, which form three of the region's borders. The fourth border, with Sonoma County, is inland and to the north-east, where half of the Marin County AVA is officially in the larger North Coast AVA.

Boutique wineries are prevalent here, with most vines grown in the west of Marin County. The challenging cool climate has seen local winemakers have some success with the unpredictable Pinot Noir grape. An extended, cool growing season means that the grapes hang on the vine for longer, resulting in high-quality yields. Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Merlot are other cool-climate varieties which do well here.
