McMinnville WineThe McMinnville AVA (American Viticultural Area) in the US state of Oregon lies just west of the historic city of McMinnville in Yamhill County. It is part of the prestigious cool-climate Willamette Valley AVA, which contains two-thirds of Oregon's vineyards and wineries. The McMinnville region is protected from most bad weather by the Oregon Coast Range to the west, and is often warmer and drier than surrounding areas. At the same time, it benefits from the cooling winds which come in from the Pacific Ocean through the Van Duzer Corridor, reducing evening temperatures and helping the grapes to retain quality-enhancing acidity. Most vineyards in McMinnville planted at 200 to 800ft (60–243m) above sea level, in the green foothills of the Coast Range. The region has a complex array of soil types with an abundant range of nutrients and minerals – said to contribute unique characters to the local wines. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are the leading grape varieties planted here. |
