Muscat de Lunel is an appellation for the vin doux naturel wines from the town of Lunel at the eastern edge of the Languedoc region of southern France. As the name suggests, these wines are made from one of the many varieties of Muscat grape, in this case Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains.
While not as famous as their close south-westerly cousin Muscat de Frontignan, Muscat de Lunel wines have earned Lunel the occasional title of 'Cite de Muscat' (City of Muscat).
The soils of Lunel are heavy in alluvial material and round pebbles left there by the glacial activity many millennia ago, during the formation of the Alps mountains and the Massif Central hills. The climate here is, obviously, definitely Mediterranean and provides the Muscat grapes with precisely the long, hot summer which they need to develop the more complex of their aromas. At their best, the wines have complex, floral notes, tinged with honey.
As with many southern French wines, production of Muscat de Lunel is dominated by a very small number of co-operatives.
