Ontario is Canada's most important wine province. The major concentration of vineyards are on the Niagara Peninsula. Climatically similar to Burgundy, the region produces fine Riesling, Chardonnay and, in warmer years, fully ripe Cabernet Franc and Merlot. No VQA wine labeled 'Ontario' can contain grapes grown outside Canada or a hybrid blend. Wines made in one of the province's three geographical designations must contain 100% Ontario grown grapes.
