Robertson is both the name of a town by the same name as well as a wine growing region in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Situated at about 100 miles from Cape Town, the area is bordered by the lower extensions of the Breede River in the south and the Langeberg mountains in the North.
Although fertile, Robertson is a sought-after wine growing region owing to a variety of terroirs resulting in diverse wine styles. The lower mountain slopes, due to their favorable exposure, soil types and hot and dry conditions are ideal for the production of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon while the riverbanks are thought to produce good Sauvignon Blancs. Chardonnay is another important variety grown in the higher altitudes.
The wards within the Robertson district Wine of Origin (WO) are; Agterkliphoogte, Bonnievale, Boesmansrivier, Eilandia, Hoopsrivier, Klaasvoogds, Le Chasseur, McGregor and Vinkrivier.
