Robertson is the name of both a town and a wine-growing district in the Western Cape of South Africa. Situated about 100 miles (160km) from Cape Town, the area is bordered by the lower extensions of the Breede river in the south and the Langeberg mountains in the north.
Robertson is a sought-after wine-growing region owing to its variety of terroirs, which are capable of producing diverse wine styles. The lower mountain slopes, with their favorable exposure, soil types and hot and dry conditions, are ideal for the production of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the river banks produce good Sauvignon Blancs. Chardonnay is another important variety grown at the higher altitudes.
The wards within the Robertson Wine of Origin (WO) district are Agterkliphoogte, Bonnievale, Boesmansrivier, Eilandia, Hoopsrivier, Klaasvoogds, Le Chasseur, McGregor and Vinkrivier.
