The tiny Rockpile AVA in Sonoma County, California is located directly north of Lake Sonoma within the larger Dry Creek Valley AVA. The majority of its vineyards are planted on a narrow ridge, 800 to 2000ft (243–609m) above sea level. The influential Pacific Ocean helps to moderate temperatures here, which in turn promotes flavor.
Rockpile was granted AVA status mainly because of the region’s unique geology; its soils are quite different from the rest of Dry Creek Valley. As the name 'Rockpile' suggests, they are rocky as well as being well-drained, stained red from oxidized iron, and peppered with shale and sandstone overlaying a clay base. This soil structure results in low grape yields and high-quality wines.
This remote, hilltop AVA is home to only a handful of wineries, yet they produce some of the most intensely flavored examples of Zinfandel to be found anywhere in the world. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Syrah also feature, though in smaller quantities.
