Saint-Romain is part of the Hautes-Cotes but has enjoyed full village Appellation Controlee status since 1947. The soil is varied, but more suitable for producing white than red wine. There are no first growths in the commune - the only one in the Cote de Beaune not to posses any. This is a village which is rather more successful in Chardonnay than in Pinot Noir.
