The South Coast wine region of California extends from Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles, to San Diego County in the south. This once prosperous wine region has been devastated by Pierce’s Disease, a bacterial infection spread by insects. Many of the derelict vineyard sites have not been replanted, shrinking the number of hectares under vine. (Copyright material - Wine-Searcher) Further out from the region's cities, grape growers persist where the warm Californian climate is moderated by the cool Pacific Ocean. Here mostly Chardonnay and Zinfandel are grown to supply a thirsty local demand.
Overall, the South Coast is a region not strongly focused on quality but increasingly superior wines can be found.
