St-Emilion, a red wine district, produces more wine than any other right bank appellation, and is home to most of the highly priced 'microchateaux'. The vines are dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc (here called Bouchet). The district, uniquely in France, has its own classification system of properties. Each is split into St-Emilion Grand Cru, St-Emilion Grand Cru Classe and St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe. (Note: St-Emilion is also an alternative name for the grape variety Ugni Blanc).
