St-Estephe is the northern most of the four most important communal appellations of the Haut-Medoc. The soils of St-Estephe contain gravel but these layers are often found on a clay base. These more poorly draining soils can be cooler, delaying ripening, and leave the grapes higher in acidity that their more southern counterparts. The stars of St-Estephe are Ch. Montrose and Ch. Cos (formerly Cos d'Estournel).
