Thermenregion, the southernmost district within the larger Niederosterreich wine region, is located south of Wein (Vienna) and shares its eastern border with Burgenland.
Thermenregion is unique in many ways. First, it is the warmest of all the Niederosterreich (Lower Austria) wine regions, constantly influenced by the Pannonian climate with hot summers and dry autumns. The vines also enjoy prolonged sunshine hours (on an average 1800 hours a year).
Another feature exclusive to the region is the use of two specially adapted indigenous grape varieties; Zierfnadler and Rotgipfler in the production of a legendary blended wine called Spätrot-Rotgipfler. The grapes also produce high quality varietal wines. These wines are produced around the world-famous village of Gumpoldskirchen.
This diverse region has a predominantly clay and alluvial based soil with weathered pebbles and patches of limestone which assist in warming the soil and also provide good drainage. These, coupled with the warm climates are excellent conditions for producing red grapes, the prominent among which are Portugieser, Zweigelt and St. Laurent.
