Thermenregion WineThe Austrian wine region of Thermenregion, the southernmost district of Niederosterreich, is located south of Wein (Vienna) and shares its eastern border with Burgenland. Thermenregion is the warmest of Niederosterreich's wine areas, influenced by gentle breezes blowing in from the Pannonian Plain and enjoying hot summers and dry autumns. Vines planted here receive prolonged amounts of sunshine (an average 1800 hours a year). Another feature of the region is the use of two specially adapted indigenous grape varieties – Zierfandler (Spatrot) and Rotgipfler. These grapes are also used in high-quality varietal wines produced around the ancient village of Gumpoldskirchen, famous for its "heurigen" – wine cellars where visitors can enjoy the newest wines. Thermenregion has a predominantly clay-based and alluvial soils with weathered pebbles and patches of limestone. These assist in warming the soil and also provide good drainage. The combination of soils and climate means that the region has excellent conditions for growing red grapes, the most prominent of which are Portugieser, Zweigelt and St. Laurent. |
