About fifty five miles east and southeast of San Francisco via the Livermore Valley, the newly formed Tracey Hills AVA (American Viticulture Area) is mostly located in San Joaquin Valley although portions of it do spill into northern parts of Stanislaus County.
Most vineyards within the region surround the town of Tracy between the low rolling Altamont Hills where they are protected from the Pacific Oceans influence by the Coastal Range. This, mostly gentle terrain is made up of alluvial soils and semi fertile plains. Limited rainfall, particularly during harvest is favorable for quality wine production and the persistent winds help to keep temperatures down. A small number of boutique winemakers produce a variety of wines with no regional signature variety emerging as yet.
