The Waipara wine region lies to the north of Christchurch city, offering growing conditions characterized by a wide range of soil types and the natural sun-trap of the valley (thanks to the shelter provided by coastal hills). The warmth is particularly useful considering the southern location of this region.
Grapes are grown in the valley floor, the river terraces and the hill slopes: the latter produces the most interesting wines due to their moderately sloping terrain and a northerly exposure. Rich and concentrated Pinot Noir and Riesling are Waipara's specialities, although Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also produce notable wines.
