Wairarapa wine region occupies the bottom tip of the North Island, from the nation's capital Wellington at the southern tip to the northern towns of Masterton and Gladstone.
The region has won acclaim for a variety of high quality wines produced mainly by boutique, quality-conscious wineries but Pinot Noir is certainly the most successful grape variety which shows distinct character when compared to its counterparts from other parts of the country. Other prominent grape varieties are Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
