Wrattonbully Wine

Wrattonbully is a wine region within the Limestone Coast zone of South Australia, located between Coonawarra and Padthaway. Like most of its neighbors, the region was first planted with vines in the 19th century, but there was no major expansion until the 1990s, when large winegrowers began planting vines in response to increasing demand and a quest to increase the quality and variety of their wines. Initially, smaller producers mainly supplied their grapes to these big players but in the recent times there has been an increase in boutique wineries. Wrattonbully was one of the last regions in the Limestone Coast zone to acquire GI (Geographical Indication) status (in 2005).

It is not hard to see why many of the top names in the Australian wine industry scrambled to get a piece of the region, as it offers all the necessary ingredients for successful wine production. First of all, the soil is an extension of the renowned terra rosa from Coonawarra in the south, and provides body and structure to the wines. Secondly, the vineyards are strategically located on gentle slopes at altitudes ranging from 246ft (75m) to 295ft (90m), making the overall maritime climate midway between that of Coonawarra and Padthaway. Conditions are characterized by the altitude and the cooling effects of the Southern Ocean, extending the growing season and adding to the complexity of the wines.

Red wines are the mainstay of Wrattonbully. Cabernet Sauvignon is the mostly commonly planted variety and produces wines with soft and complex tannin structures and plenty of ripe berry flavors with mineral hints. Shiraz and Merlot are the other prominent reds. Chardonnay is the main white grape variety, producing wines with good acidity and a balanced flavor profile.
