The Yountville AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a sub-appellation of the Napa Valley wine-growing region of California. It shares its northern boundary with the renowned Oakville AVA and its southern border with the cool-climate Oak Knoll District. It was the site of the first vineyards in the Napa Valley, planted here in 1836 by George Yount, after whom the town of Yountville is named. The area was granted AVA status in 1999.
Yountville's cooler growing conditions result in elegant wines with chunky tannins and deep concentration, which age for a long time in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon from Yountville is particularly well regarded. Merlot, Zinfandel and Syrah also produce some great wines here, as do the cool-climate varieties Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
