Algeria is one of the oldest wine producing countries of the world. Vineyards were planted in the Zaccar, Medea, Tlemcen, Dahra, and Mascara regions on the Southern shores of the Mediterranean. These varieties were planted in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains at an altitude of 1500 to 3000 feet, at first most of the harvest was used for table grapes rather than for wine - wine is now produced in five major areas.
