The second grape spirit of France is Armagnac, produced to the south-east of Bordeaux. Armagnac claims to be older than Cognac, and was first produced by the Moors in the 12th Century. The grape varieties used are Ugni Blanc, Picpoule (Folle Blanche), Colombard, Blanquette and Baco Blanc 22A (known locally as Piquepouls de Pays).
