The vineyards of Bairrada lie between those of Dao and the sea. The soils have a mainly clay base ('barro' is Portuguese for 'clay'), sometimes mixed with limestone. The traditional wine of the region is a rich, full-flavored red made from the Baga grape. Any red Bairrada must have a minimum of 50% of this grape, although it is usually as high as 80%.
