The town of Blaye, on the north bank of the Gironde, lends its name to a number of 'Bordeaux Cote' appellations, although at the beginning of the 20th Century it produced mainly white wine for distillation into Cognac. Cotes de Blaye (also called Blaye and Blayais) is the white wine produced in this area. Ugni Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc are the principal grape varieties.
