The Horse Heaven Hills was granted AVA status in August 2005. It lies both south and east of the Yakima Valley AVA and is bordered by the Columbia River to the south. Of its 570,000 acres, about 6,000 are given over to vines, the most predominant being cabernet sauvignon.
