Wines from Vendange Tardive

Late-picked wines have always been produced in small quantities in outstanding vintages. They were formerly sold as Spatlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese and the grower was free to decide which category he would choose. It was only in 1983 that legislation was passed to give a legal definition to Alsace's late-picked, sweet wines. To be labeled as Vendange Tardive a wine must come from a single vintage, from one of the four permitted varieties –Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris or Gewurtztraminer.
