Alella DO (Denominación de Origen) is a small and little-known designation within the autonomous community of Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, just nine miles (15km) north of the Catalan capital, Barcelona. The region was awarded DO status in 1956 but has shrunk to just one-third of its original size, under the pressures of urban development.
