While the grape may be more readily associated with the Loire Valley (for its pivotal role in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume), it is more likely to have originated from Bordeaux, where it is typically blended with Semillon.

Pouilly-Fume wine region
Pouilly-Fume is one of the Loire wine region's most famous appellations, along with its neighbor Sancerre, just across the river. The Fume in the title actually means 'smoky' and refers to the gunflint (pierre a fusil) character of the appellation's Sauvignon Blanc.
