Barbera and Bonarda (Croatina) are two grape varieties used in the blended red wines of the Gutturnio DOC of Emilia-Romagna. Here the blend is based on between 55-70 percent Barbera and 30-45 percent Croatina (known locally as Bonarda). The wines tend to be softly flavored and well rounded with distinctive cherry aromas. Gutturnio is the newest DOC introduced to the hilly vineyards south of Piacenza, in western Emilia-Romagna. It was raised from its status as a sub-zone of the Colli Piacentini in July 2010 after decades of campaigning by local winemakers.
