Region Hierarchy
  • Apalta wine region

Apalta is a small wine-growing sub-region of the Colchagua Valley in Chile, which is home to a number of highly sought-after wines. Located just north of the Tinguiririca river, which forms its southern boundary, Apalta is worthy of note because of its topography and resulting mesoclimate. Its vineyards are planted in a fertile horsehoe-shaped valley, sheltered on its northern, eastern and western sides by hills of around 2000ft (600m). The vines are well protected from weather fluctuations, yet still benefit from the cooling breezes which move between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. The Tinguiririca river also serves to moderate the temperatures, as well as providing Andean meltwater for irrigation.
