Grape Variety: Merlot

Merlot is a red wine variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the south-west of France. It is the predominant variety in most wines from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, the area in which the variety originated. The variety is now widely planted in wine regions across the world, and in terms of the volumes of wine produced internationally, it is rivaled only by its Bordeaux companion, Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Paso Robles wine region

    California's famous Paso Robles is the largest AVA in San Luis Obispo County. It is in fact among the largest in California, rivalled only by the state's regional AVAs: North Coast, Sierra Foothills, San Francisco Bay and Central Coast. There are varying claims about the AVA's size, but the US Wine Institute lists it as 666,500 acres (270,000ha), two-thirds the size of the entire Central Coast AVA.

    Paso Robles' northern boundary follows the county line separating San Luis Obispo from Monterey.
