Grape Variety: Glera (Prosecco)

Glera (formerly Prosecco) is the name approved by the European Union (EU) for the green-skinned Prosecco grape of north-eastern Italy. The name change occurred in 2009, when the Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene region was promoted to DOCG status and the Italian authorities decided that Prosecco should only be used as a geographical indication. Glera, an old synonym of the Prosecco grape, was chosen to avoid confusion between the Prosecco region and grape variety.

    Prosecco di Treviso is the title used for wines produced under the Prosecco DOC of north-eastern Italy, specifically from vineyards within the Treviso province of Veneto. When the Prosecco DOC was introduced in 2009, two provincial sub-regions were identified, the other being Trieste in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

    The Prosecco di Treviso title is available to all Prosecco wines from the Treviso province, provided they conform to the DOC production regulations. The other Veneto provinces which produce Prosecco (Belluno, Padova, Venezia and Vicenza) label their Prosecco without the province name appended.
