Indicative blend: Merlot, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot.
Tasting note: This Carmenere based red was first produced in 1997. Clos Apalata is from Colchagua. The extraction is too excessive and the finish is very dry. Flavours are good but the tannins are tough and dry on the finish. Will be trying another bottle soon. Tasted in: Santiago, Chile. Maturity: Drink. (01-Nov-2012) [Asian Palate Jeannie Cho Lee]

A Bordeaux Blend, at its most basic, is any combination of those grape varieties typically used to make the red wines of Bordeaux. The phrase, which seems to have originated with British wine merchants in the 19th Century, relates as much to wines made from the blend as to the grape-variety combination itself. Far from being an officially defined or legal term, it is almost never used for wine-labeling purposes (although it occasionally appears on back labels). Its equivalent in the United States is Meritage, which is not only legally defined, but also a registered trademark.

The region stretches from the Pacific coast in the west to the slopes of the Andes 60 miles (100km) to the east, so it is not surprising that its landscapes and climates are varied. Rainfall is generally low and the region leans towards ... more
