Arinto and Loureiro are two of the most widely used white wine grape varieties in Portugal. Together, and often in league with Trajadura (Treixadura), they form the backbone of the crisp, tangy white wines of Vinho Verde. Arinto hails from southern Portugal, but was a welcome migrant to the north (where it is known as Pederna).     Vinho Verde is a well-known DOC in the Minho region of north-western Portugal. Each year it is responsible for vast quantities of straw-yellow, light-bodied, tangily tart wines produced from many thousands of smallholdings throughout the region. And amid the wash of white wine is the faint glimmer of ruby-tinged red Vinho Verde, relatively hard to come by outside Portugal, but worth the effort.

    A quantity of the wines made here are so fresh and youthful that they earn the moniker verde ('green'), which applies even to the reds.     Minho is Portugal's northernmost wine region, located on the Atlantic coast just south of Spanish Galicia. This area of coastline is known as the Costa Verde (Green Coast), due to the lush countryside which lies just inland.
