For many, the claim above may seem at odds with the sea of chaptalized, low-quality wine exported from Germany in the late 20th century. In truth, very little of that infamous wine was Riesling at all (Riesling became a scapegoat for higher-yielding grapes such as Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner), but the reputation has nonetheless stuck.     Known as the Rhine Palatinate (or in German, Rheinpfalz) until 1992, Pfalz has 58,000 acres (23,400ha) of land planted to grapevines, making it the second largest wine region in Germany. (Rheinhessen is the largest.)

    Pfalz extends from Worms at the northern junction with Rheinhessen, all the way south to Schweigen. It is here that the Schweigener Sonnenberg vineyard reaches across the French border into what is modern-day Alsace. In fact, it has been said that Pfalz has more in common with Alsace as a wine region that it does with other viticultural centres in Germany.
