Known as the Rhine Palatinate (or in German, Rheinpfalz) until 1992, Pfalz has 58,000 acres (23,400ha) of land planted to grapevines, making it the second largest wine region in Germany. (Rheinhessen is the largest.)
Pfalz extends from Worms at the northern junction with Rheinhessen, all the way south to Schweigen. It is here that the Schweigener Sonnenberg vineyard reaches across the French border into what is modern-day Alsace.
