- Producer Notes
- The Pellegrini family, Aia Vecchia's owners, have been grape growers in the Bolgheri area for several generations and have sold their grapes to many of the most notable wineries in the region for decades. After replanting their original vineyards in 1995, the following year they took the plunge and established their own winery with the goal of creating a portfolio of small-lot, high-quality Super Tuscan blends focusing on Bordeaux grape varieties. With the help of the famous Hungarian winemaker Tibor Gal, the Pellegrini family purchased exceptional property in the Bolgheri area where the fusion of the microclimate, terrain and elevation creates an ideal location for growing premium grapes Aia Vecchia recruited well-known agronomist Daniel Schuster to assist with choosing varieties, clones, and different rootstocks, which come directly from Bordeaux in order to ensure the quality.

The winery’s vineyards located in Bolgheri and Maremma on the Tuscan Coast are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc , Petit Verdot, Vermentino, Viognier for the production of: Lagone, Sor Ugo, Vermentino e Orleto. The particularly favorable microclimate and ideally suited soils of this area make the production of high quality wines possible. The position of the vineyards allow the vines to receive a great deal of light, both direct sunlight and indirect as reflected off of the sea, which allows for an early harvest.

Tasted: Sep 2018
A chewy and juicy red with lots of fruit and tannins. A little too much wood now. Full body. Very dry at the end. A little too much, but it might come around. Let’s see in 2020.
2013 Vintage
Tasted: Nov 2015
A rich, flavorful red full of ripe fruit and new wood. Full-bodied and intense but shows an underlying freshness and depth. Needs two to three years to soften: better in 2017.
2012 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2015
Aromas of new wood, coconut and roasted coffee beans lead the nose of this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The bracing palate offers oak extract, prune, pomegranate, powdered sage and espresso alongside assertive, astringent tannins that dry out the finish. It lacks the fruit richness needed to stand up to the oak.
2011 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2015
Aromas of green bell pepper, grass, black currant and herbaceous notes open this easy-drinking blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The soft, one-dimensional palate offers cassis, dried cherry, mocha and espresso alongside round tannins. Drink through 2016.

Tasted: Jan 2013
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this opens with rich, concentrated aromas of black fruit and milk chocolate. There are savory notes of dark pipe tobacco, clove and cardamom. The palate is masculine and powerful, with firm tannins.

Tasted: Jul 2012
Lagone is a pleasurable and rich blend of Merlot, Cab Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Sangiovese that opens with rich, dark color and intense aromas of sweet spice, chocolate, cherry and tobacco. The wine feels chewy and smooth in the mouth with a long, velvety feel on the close.
2009 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2012
A pungent touch of apple skin or root beer gives this wine a sharp, immediate personality. At the back are dark fruit, leather and spice aromas and a clean, tonic finish.
2010 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2011
Very ripe style, almost raisiny with molasses and toasted oak. Big and bold style. A little rustic in the end but delicious. Better in 2013.
2009 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2011
A little raisiny and stewy, but some good fruit.

This is a beautiful expression of the wonderful blended wines that are been produced in this area. 60% Merlot with the balance split of Cab sauv & Cab Franc. Deep purplish red color, flavors of wild berries & ripe cherries. Very smooth & structured mouthfeel, with elegant spice notes. Will age well!
