Critic tasting note: (2023 vintage) "Mendes & Symington is a partnership between Vinho Verde producer Anselmo Mendes and the Symington Family Estates, the parent company that includes Grahams, Dow, and Warre ports (among a broad portfolio of wineries). Vinho Verde wines offer a go-to summer style for warm weather days. Lighter in alcohol, I find the style refreshing and easy drinking. Contacto’s three-months of lees aging gives it a rounder flavor and additional complexities, and that style also derives in part from the use of Alvarinho—the same variety known as Albariño to the north in Spain’s Rías Baixas region. Still holding excellent acidity, the wine shows passion fruit, melon, white peach, starfruit, slate, and saline notes. This floral wine, with its jasmine and bitter orange aromas, is ripe and full of rich potential. It is fresh with density and an edge of structure from the skin contact during fermentation. Drink from 2025.
