Perfumed oak supports a big, plush palate of dry, supple tannin and robustly ripe plum and black cherry. Herbal notes of cedar accent the fruit alongside an earthy plume of clove. Virginie Boone

This wine is flat and simple, with touches of herbaceous earthiness and cedar. Plum and blueberry-fruit flavors are welcoming if lacking in complexity, with the finish offering a hint of cinnamon.
2013 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2016
Considerable aromas of eucalyptus, Bay leaf and cedar rise to the front of this wine, making for an inviting, savory introduction that provides a reasonable complexity. Easygoing, approachable and softly light bodied, it'll do well at the table and big-crowd events.
2011 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2014
A mix of plum and vanilla, this is an easygoing Merlot that's good for most group occasions and palates, muted in aroma but developed in flavor.
2007 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2013
Surprisingly rich and complex for an under-$20 Merlot, and could even gain with a year or two in the cellar. It's dry and smooth in tannins, with delicious cherry, tobacco, spice and sweet oak flavors.
2008 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2012
A soft, simple wine, this has flavors of cherry candy, spice and oak. It's getting a little tired, so drink up now.
2007 Vintage Tasted: Oct 2011
The signature of Sonoma merlot is its supple texture and soft tannins and this Benziger has it in spades. Certified sustainable it's hard not to like the rich black fruit and pepper aromas and flavours with a dash of milk chocolate. Beef tenderloin is recommended by the winery and we concur. Spicy, cedar, vanilla, black cherry, menthol, tobacco, black olive, Band-Aid and chocolate aromas. Dry, round, elegant, fresh but slightly tight palate. Peppery, plum, spicy, coffee, vanilla, cedar, mint, black olive and tobacco flavours with a cardamom and coffee finish. Good solid style with some elegance. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).

They held this Merlot back almost four years, a long time for a relatively inexpensive wine. Hard to say why, for the tannins are still aggressive, and the wine feels tough and dryly gritty.
2002 Vintage Tasted: Apr 2006
Typical Benziger merlot (sans cherry popsicle). Look for cedar, spicy, black olive, tobacco, dill, barnyard, coffee nose. Round, supple, elegant style with cedar, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, smoky, black cherry, spicy, tea flavours with a dill, olive finish. A bit dry and tight but it has some elegance. Mike Benziger hates cherry popsicle/green tea merlot which explains his style. Look for a peppery, spicy, clove, coffee, black cherry nose with some light barnyard and cedar streaks. The styling is soft and round, the structure velvety. Ripe cherry, peppery, leather, mocha, plum and spicy dill flavours with a savoury, gamey, pudding finish. Good acidity and well balanced; made for current consumption or over the next 3 years. The fruit is a 60/40 mix of Dry Creek, Alexander Valley and Sonoma /with Carneros. 2001 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004
Benziger keeps the good wines coming. This one straddles the line between ripe cherry and berry fruit flavors and earthier notes of mushrooms and dried herbs. Oak provides the bass. It's dry and tannic, and cries out for fine, rich meats and cheeses.
2000 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2003
Plum and blackberry flavors, with edges of tobacco, meat and herb, are wrapped in fairly rugged tannins. This is a young, fresh regional wine and a bit tough, but it could soften and sweeten in a year or two.
1999 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2003
Pretty tannic now, with underlying fruity flavors of plum, blackberry, herbs and earth. Drinks very dry and a bit austere, and there's tartness in the dusty finish. May gain with an additional year or two of age.
2000 Vintage Tasted: Dec 2002
Ripe black cherry, cedar, peppery, spicy black olive nose with light oak toast in the background. Rich and round with slightly dry tannins, this has good vanilla, smoky cola, black cherry, olive and leather flavours. Nice textures on the palate and ready to drink but will benefit from a year or two in bottle. (Stuart Tobe).
1999 Vintage Tasted: Mar 2002
Leafy tobacco and sweaty herbaceous tones mark the nose. Rich round entry with big black cherry fruit and more leafy smoky vanilla highlights. Quite dry in the finish and will need a year or two to settle down. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).
