'La Storica' is the estate wine library; all the vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva are scrupulously kept there, benefiting from a long refinement in the bottle and are re-released by the winery directly. Riserva is produced only in outstanding years.
Producer tasting notes: (2013 vintage) "The 2013 Riserva speaks of the aromas of our land. On the nose it reveals a vast and intriguing bouquet reminiscent of the forest floor in autumn, of aromatic herbs, of porcini mushrooms and of sour cherries. At a young age the character of this Riserva is pleasantly austere, yet immediately refined, showing sublime equilibrium and elegance with reserved delicacy. On the palate its structure and complexity shine through as the tasting experience moves plastically along both the vertical and the horizontal axis in a crescendo of sensations which will continue to grow in time. Vintage 2013 is officially the 40th Riserva produced from 1888 until 2013. For the first time in history Biondi-Santi produced three large formats in addition to the 750 ml bottle: Magnum, Jéroboam and Mathusalem." - Tenuta Biondi Santi

After a mild autumn, the winter was quite cold with generous rainfalls that continued until early summer, causing a delay in the start of the vegetative cycle. From the second half of July until the end of September the weather was warm and stable with considerable day/night temperature swings which contributed to developing the intense aromatic profile of the grapes. The harvest started in late September – slightly delayed compared to average vintages at Tenuta Greppo.

Ein Jahrgang, der witterungsbedingt zunächst viel forderte, aber am Ende dann belohnte. Es ist der 40ste Jahrgang eines Riserva, der seit 1888 gefüllt wurde. In der Nase sehr vielschichtig mit betörenden Waldaromen, getrockneten Steinpilze, etwas Mandeln, frisches Nadelholz. Am Gaumen jugendlich, fein akzentuiert und sehr elegant mit dunkler Frucht, etwas Orangenschale, Zedernholz. Sehr langer Abgang, der sich immer weiter öffnet und das ganze Spektrum dieses grossartigen Weines zeigt, der mit Reife sein Potenzial entfalten wird.

Aromas of forest berries, rose and camphor with whiffs of underbrush and new leather slowly take shape on this radiant red. Elegant to the point of being almost ethereal, it's still youthfully austere, featuring tangy cranberry, sour cherry, orange zest and star anise before a black tea finish. Tightly wound, refined tannins and bright acidity provide the framework. This needs several years or more to fully come together and develop to its full potential. Drink 2028–2048. Kerin O’Keefe

A fresh, linear 2013 with cherry, mushroom and cedar character. Lots of blue fruit as well. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins and a creamy finish. Still very tight, this needs time to open if you want to drink it now, Try decanting two or three hours in advance. Best after 2024.

Shiny, intense ruby with a pronounced garnet tongue. Opens with slightly earthy notes, black truffle, also some anchovy, then lots of ripe plum, balsamic notes in the background. On the approach very good volume, fills the palate immediately and full, very juicy cherry fruit, shows fine-meshed tannin in many layers, very good tension, at the end savoury notes of coriander seeds, salty.
