2009 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2013
Very ripe and extracted, this has flavors of blackberries and cherries that are a bit heavy-handed. There's a lot of oak influence, too, which adds to the heaviness.
2005 Vintage
Tasted: Jul 2011
This used to be an important wine, but no more. It's Marlstone in name only, a dry, thin effort with weedy blackberry flavors that are just good enough to pass. Drink up.
2004 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2008
Fans of the Marlstone of yesterday will be sorely disappointed by this Bordeaux blend, which has been losing traction for years. It's rustic and sharp in acids, with the sweet and sour cherry and orange flavors of a Chinese sauce.
2002 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2005
I like this Cabernet blend for its fruitiness, but it's way too soft for balance. There's no spine, no backbone to the cherry, cassis and oak flavors. It lacks not only acidity but tannins.
2001 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2005
After two years in French oak, the tannins are soft, but the acids still evident. Has pretty aromas and flavors of vanilla, tobacco, smoke and cassis, just seems a bit hard-edged on the finish. A blend ofCabernet SauvignonMerlotMalbecCabernet Franc andPetit Verdot.
1999 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2003
Always classy, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec shows richness and complexity. The flavors change constantly, suggesting blackberries, sweet plums, espresso, herbs and chocolate. The tannins are a wonder, soft and gentle.
1996 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2000
This was once a defining wine from Sonoma County but it has slipped in recent vintages. Here it's slightly green with pickle-like notes to the oak (American oak?). Dry, spicy and simple. Unfortunately, memories of this wine are brighter than the current version.
2003 Vintage
Marlstone is an old, historic, proprietary wine, but it's been under-performing for some years now. A Cabernet-based blend of all five Bordeaux varieties, this wine is good but has a rustic edge to the very ripe berry and cherry flavors. It should be better.
