Little by little, it evokes stories of distant places, market stalls brimming with unfamiliar fruits, spices and wares, village festivities warmed by the joy of revelers and the setting sun, and sumptuous visions of ladies and their voluptuous curves. A myriad of scents, colors and tastes appeals to the senses. The Grand Vin of Cos d’Estournel is both demure and deliberately sensuous, a fascinating and elegant nectar.

Ruby, thin brick rim. Some herbs, cassis, tobacco, spices, dried fruits, more evolved nose than the other 86's so far this tasting. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, figs, dates, raisins, bit flat, lacks some lift, even if some will love the fruit forward body, long.

Like many Bordeaux wines from 1986, this is a tough, hard, style of wine that some people love, while others will find it difficult to enjoy. And of course there are also tasters that recognize this is not their style of wine, but it has a wealth of fruit. Count me in as a charter member of group number 3. Does it have enough fruit to outlast the tannins before maturity? It will take at least 10-20 years more time to find. The wine offers massive concentration from ripe fruit. Butt the wine lacks elegance and charm. It's a beast. For me, while I get the depth of flavor, at the end of the day, it was not a lot of fun to drink.

VINUM 6/1987 - Die Primeurnotizen zu den vier 86er Bordeaux stammen nicht von mir ? ich war damals als Weinjournalist noch nicht geboren, und vielleicht hätte ich nicht allen die Höchstnote erteilt. Dieser Cos – ich habe ihn mehrmals verkostet in den letzten 20 Jahren – war lange der verschlossenste, kantigste von allen. Diese Art hat er bis heute nicht abgelegt. Die Tannine des vom Gut eingereichten Musters gleichen punkto Intensität denen von Latour, auch wenn sie eine Spur weniger breit, dafür etwas rassiger, länglicher ausfallen. Die Nase ist die eines Saint-Estèphe der damaligen Zeit, eine Spur animalisch zuerst, dann balsamisch, mit Noten von Tabak und Cassis. Ich würde den Wein glatt noch zehn Jahre länger reifen lassen. Auch wenn man weit entfernt ist von der heutigen Präzision und er mit Kraft und Charakter aufwiegt, was er an Eleganz vermissen lässt: ein grosser Wein.

(1998) Very deep colour, with amber rim. An older wine. Quite a distinctive, cheesy, ripe nose. Very serious wine this. A streak of peppery, cabernet fruit on the palate, with rich, chewy texture and lovely balance. Loads of tannin in the finish, but fine length and purity. This is in need of more time as it's pretty tough still, but is quite something.

1986 Vintage Saved: 9-Nov-2024

An earlier review called this wine a beast. It has been tamed but that review helps this one. My perfect cork revealed a dark ruby color upon decanting. The aromas in decanter ok but the initial nose was not very dark fruit forward but intense dry fruit nose. When tasted same as dried raisin (i am not great at these descriptions, i drink my cellared wines at home). Reminds me of HautBrion but less tar. If you have some please try now and opine! No rush to drink at all.

The first 5 minutes in the glass we all had a taste of cheese, it's somehow funny. Tasted with 3 friends we mentioned the freshness and warmnes of the following changes for the next hour. Then, the bottle was empty, sigh... Great.
